Ballet Virginia is located in the heart of historical Ghent in Norfolk (click here for map).
Our facility includes 5 spacious studios all with sprung floors and Marley covering which offers the finest and safest surface for dancers to train and rehearse on. The spacious lobby with free Wifi and comfortable tables and chairs allows parents to wait in a relaxing environment while their child is in class or rhearsal.
Ballet Virginia International is within walking distance from restaurants, drug stores, grocery and other unique shopping oppotunities. Dressing rooms, bathrooms and a study area complete the facility.
Ballet Virginia International specializes in a diverse ballet syllabus inspired by the American, Russian, Italian, English and French schools. This solid technical base insures added success in classical ballet technique and pointe, partnering, modern, contemporary, jazz, and character classes. Also offered at BVI are Boy’s Class, Adult Ballet, Community Ballet, Beginning Tap, and Tumbling for Dancers. Each Ballet Virginia International’s motivation is to nurture a child’s natural desire to dance. Musicality and artistry are developed joyously in our supportive environment. Like-minded students enjoy a camaraderie that will provide wonderful memories and life-long friendships.
This program is a perfect introduction to ballet for the young dancer. Instilling a love for the art and providing the tools necessary for success as a student progresses are the focus. Simply stated, this is where a dancer “learns how to learn”. Through creative movement, the dancer continues to work on both small and gross motor skills in a fun and warm environment.

Ballet B and C
This program is designed for the recreational dancer who loves to dance, but needs to set their own schedule.
Dancers in the professional program must be committed and possess the physical requirements needed to facilitate classical ballet movement. Beginning in level 3, they must train year round, including a pre-approved summer study program or continue their training with BVI’s Summer Programs. These levels are a progressive course of study designed to bring a dancer from the rudimentary technique of ballet to the technical prowess of a professional artist. Optional electives available in jazz, tap, tumbling for dancers, modern, and character.
The P and G levels are a way of grouping students into an environment that is best suited to their individual needs, meaning physical strength, mind/body connection, flexibility and maturity. This program is designed for the serious dancer age 8 to 20 whose goals include a professional career in dance or acceptance to a major College or University dance program. These levels meet more than once a week.
1P, 1G, –These levels have two 1 hour technique classes per week. Optional electives available.
2P, 2G – These levels have two 1.5 hour technique classes per week.
3G, 3P – These levels have three 1.5 hour technique classes, one pre-pointe class and one modern class included per week.
4 – This level has three 1.5 hour technique classes, two pointe classes one modern and one character class included per week.
5 – This level has three 1.5 hour technique classes, two pointe classes, variations, one modern and one character class included per week.
6 – This level has three 1.5 hour technique classes, two pointe classes, variations, one modern and one character class included per week.
Performing Company – By audition or invitation only
This level is the final tier of the professional program. Acceptance into the Performing Company is by audition only. Each dancer receives up to 23 hours per week of concentrated training that includes technique classes and rehearsals. Additional master level and elective courses are offered to create a versatile classical ballet dancer. The Performing Company dancers are the corps de ballet of all Ballet Virginia International’s productions. Company dancers often progress to the soloist and principal levels in productions which give them the experience needed for a professional career. This program is designed for the serious dancer age 12 to 18 whose goals include a professional career in dance or acceptance to a major College or University dance program.
